The Staff of the Embassy of Algeria in Athens, together with members of the Algerian Community established in Greece, commemorated, on Wednesday, May 8, 2024, the National Day of Memory to pay tribute to the 45.000 civilian victims of the massacres perpetrated on 8 May, 1945 in the cities of Setif, Guelma and Kherrata, by the French occupation forces against the demonstrators who, taking advantage of the festivities marking the end of the 2nd World War, demonstrated in several cities of the country to peacefully claim the freedom and independence of Algeria.
Algeria celebrated, on 8 May 2021, for the first time, the “National Memory day”, instituted by Mr Abdelmadjid TEBBOUNE, President of the Republic, on May, 2020, with the main objective of raising awareness among new generations of Algerians of the sacrifices made over the years by their elders, to enable Algeria to achieve independence and the Algerian people to live free and regain their dignity.
After observing a minute of silence and reciting the Fatiha in memory of the victims of these massacres, the participants heard a brief presentation in which were underlined the importance of this painful stage in the Algerian liberation struggle and the need to perpetuate among all generations the flame of patriotism which enable the brave Algerian resistance fighters to overcome 132 years of abject and brutal colonization.
